All of our ravintsara is grown in the highland region of Madagascar near Fianarantsoa, a city south of Antananarivo, where it does well on the sandy, well-drained soil and thanks to the system of the rainy and dry season it has the excellent environment to produce high levels of eucalyptol, the main active ingredient in ravintsara leaves. Ravintsara actually means ‘good leaf’ in Malagasy, due to its pleasant smell and its medicinal properties as it is seen as a miracle plant by the locals. Contrary to the camphor tree in Asia, ravintsara barely has any camphor, the strong-smelling compound in tiger balm. Instead, in the highlands of Madagascar it started to produce eucalyptol in its leaves, the most important element of ravintsara essential oil.
Our ravintsara leaves, rich in eucalyptol, come from several fields owned and cultivated by local Malagasy farmers who have been cultivating this wonderful fragrant plant for decades and knowing all the little tricks it takes to have the best growing conditions to ultimately lead to the highest quality of ravintsara leaves in all of Madagascar.
A part of the production is used for ravintsara tea, which is mostly consumed in Madagascar and still not very known outside of the island. The rest of the ravintsara leaves are made locally into essential oil. During this process we make sure that from seedling to leaf, there are no harmful additives of pesticides used, as we wouldn’t want to have our oil or dried leaves contaminated. We are proud to say that besides being locally grown our ravintsara is also 100 percent organic and free of additives! Outside the harvest times, we often visit the fields to inspect the leaves and make sure the plants are healthy and growing well and all of our essential oil is produced and bottled locally before it is imported abroad. A fun fact about the ravintsara leaf is that the young leaves actually start as brown-red leaves and gradually turn into green! For the production of ravintsara essential oil only the greenest leaves are used as these have the highest amount of essential oil. Ravintsara is traditionally harvested in November and the harvest season ends in March. During the harvest season the branches are removed as the oil is concentrated in the leaves. These are then dried for several days to lose their moisture. The still is then used for distillation in which we use 300 kilos of leaves, after three hours of cooking the oil is extracted from the leaves. We now have ravintsara essential oil, as well as hydrosole.
